The foundation of ergonomic baby carrying is the M-position, also known as the "squat-and-straddle" posture. When a baby is placed in an ergonomic carrier, their legs should form an M-shape: thighs supported up to the knee, knees bent slightly higher than the hips, and the bottom resting lower than the knees. This position keeps the hip joint in its natural socket, promoting healthy hip development and reducing the risk of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH).
The International Hip Dysplasia Institute (IHDI) has long advocated for hip-healthy carrying positions, and their research underpins the design of every Happybear carrier. In the first months of life, a baby's hip joints are still developing, and the ball-and-socket structure is not yet fully stable. The M-position ensures that the femoral head sits correctly within the acetabulum (the hip socket), allowing for normal, healthy development.
